WHAT: “Pictures at an Exhibition”
Opening weekend of the Grand Canyon Music Festival’s 24th season, Saturday, September 1, 2007, and Sunday, September 2, 2007, honors Arizona artists Ruth and John Waddell. A gift to the Grand Canyon Music Festival from Gary K. and Jeanne L. Herberger of 2 of John Waddell’s bronze relief sculptures — part of a large multi-grouping relief titled “Earth and Space” — prompted plans to honor the Waddells, long-time friends of the Grand Canyon Music Festival and an inspiration to festival founders Clare Hoffman and Robert Bonfiglio. Serendipitously, the extraordinary ensemble Trio Solisti was preparing a weekend of music for the Grand Canyon Music Festival centered around Mussorgsky’s masterwork “Pictures at an Exhibition,” composed to represent Mussorgsky’s own progress through an exhibit of drawings and watercolors by his friend, the architect and artist Viktor Hartmann, who had recently died at the age of 39. John Waddell’s relief sculptures will frame the stage at the Shrine of the Ages, surrounding the musicians as they perform, and audience members will be able to experience a virtual “Pictures at an Exhibition,” the art of John and Ruth Waddell on display in the lobby of the Shrine of the Ages.

The Grand Canyon Music Festival plans to sell and/or auction the reliefs to benefit their education outreach programs.
